Northern Forest Logging IDF&G 1997-2002
The Northern forest and most of the shoreline is owned by Idaho Department of Fish and Game, it is a designated wildlife sanctuary dedicated by deed from the US government to exclusively serve native non-migratory birds. IDF&G logged the Farragut Wildlife Management Area to help pay for their new building in Coeur d Alene, ID.
Outcomes:
•Two miles of scenic trail turned into logging road
•Thinned areas now thick dog-hair fir
•Weed spread
•EXTREME fire danger upwind from Bayview
• Logging has a negative impact on native forest birds.
•Large tree removal. The prescription was for retaining of old growth, skid roads wind through old growth
•Skid roads, now thick dog-hair fir, increase fire danger
• Skid trail thinning: young forest crisscrossed with skid roads now dog hair and weeds
• Viewpoint logging: Clear cut sensitive scenic area
